Not a color study, but essentially an article containing color information, was published by Max G. Johl in 1935-37 in his textbooks United States Postage Stamps of the 20th Century. A reproduction of Johl’s work was published by Quarterman Publication in one textbook in 1976. “The Eleven Cents Stamps Grouped” section in the book, mentions the following shades, but does not link them directly to plates:
pale peacock blue | light peacock blue | bright peaccock blue |
peacock blue | deep peacock blue | bright blue |
deep bright blue | pale greenish blue | light greenish blue |
greenish blue | turquise blue | light turquise green |
turquise green | pale green | light green |
yellow green | bright green | green |
deep green | pale milky blue | light milky blue |
milky blue | light milky greenish blue | milky greenish blue |
greenish blue |
Descriptive terms like pale, light, bright, and deep represent the effect of value and chroma on hue.
